3-10: Lokavolokanasuttaṁ (30)
1. evaṁ me sutaṁ:
ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā uruvelāyaṁ viharati, najjā nerañjarāya tīre Editor’s note: BJT,
2. atha kho bhagavā tassa sattāhassa accayena, tamhā samādhimhā vuṭṭhahitvā buddhacakkhunā lokaṁ volokesi. addasā kho bhagavā buddhacakkhunā lokaṁ volokento satte anekehi santāpehi santappamāne, anekehi ca pariḷāhehi pariḍayhamāne, rāgajehi pi dosajehi pi mohajehi pī BJT:
3. atha kho bhagavā etam-atthaṁ viditvā, tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi: BJT lays out the following udāna as though it were all in verse. However as it appears that most of it is prose, the material as presented here has been re-arranged accordingly (some of the material in this Udāna I owe to suggestions made to me by Prof. K. R. Norman, in private correspondence).
“ayaṁ loko santāpajāto phassapareto
rogaṁ vadati attato, Metre: abc are in Anuṭṭhubha metre (or in Siloka with an Anuṭṭhubha variation). They appear to be the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th lines of a verse, which gives rise to a strong expectation that the opening line of the Udāna should be in the same metre, but as it stands it is not possible to make the line scan.
yena yena hi maññati
tato taṁ hoti aññathā.
aññathābhāvi bhavasatto loko bhavapareto,
yad-abhinandati taṁ bhayaṁ, ~ yassa bhāyati taṁ dukkhaṁ.
bhavavippahānāya kho panidaṁ brahmacariyaṁ vussati.

ye hi keci samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā bhavena bhavassa vippamokkham-āhaṁsu, sabbe te avippamuttā bhavasmā ti vadāmi. ye vā pana keci samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā vibhavena bhavassa nissaraṇam-āhaṁsu, sabbe te anissaṭā bhavasmā ti vadāmi.

evam-etaṁ yathābhūtaṁ ~ sammappaññāya passato,
bhavataṇhā pahīyati
vibhavaṁ nābhinandati.
sabbaso taṇhānaṁ khayā asesavirāganirodho nibbānaṁ. tassa nibbutassa bhikkhuno,
anupādānā punabbhavo na hoti.
abhibhūto māro vijitasaṅgāmo,
