Adorned with supremely pure faith, intelligence and energy, rejoicing in the arising of the qualities of virtuous living, strength, gentleness and so on, skilled in grasping his own and other’s doctrines, endowed with lucidity of wisdom, having the power of unerring knowledge in the Teacher’s dispensation, commentaries, and the divisions of the scriptures in the Three Baskets, a great expositor, with appropriate accomplishment of articulation, generating happiness that emerges from sweet and exalted words that are beautiful, one speaking what is connected to release, a noble speaker, a great poet – surrounded by those with diverse analytic knowledges, those adorned with the six super knowledges, the analytic knowledges and so on, including the virtue of linguistic analysis, firmly established in intelligence regarding the supermundane states, the bright lights of the lineage of the elders, those elders in the Great Monastery, the true ornament of the lineage, with extensive purified intelligence – the respected Buddhaghosa, whose name was given by his teachers, by this elder the Dhamma Verses Commentary was written.
So far may it continue in the world,
for those seeking to cross over the world,
showing to the sons of good family,
the method, through wisdom, faith and so on.
For as long as the name ‘Buddha’ exists
in the world, said of one with pure mind, of
the elder of the world, the great seer.
