From the beloved arises grief, from the beloved arises fear,
priyebhyo vipramuktānāṁ nāsti śokaḥ, kuto bhayam? 5.1
for those fully freed from the beloved there is no grief, how is there fear?

Piyato jāyatī soko, piyato jāyatī bhayaṁ,
From the beloved arises grief, from the beloved arises fear,
piyato vippamuttassa natthi soko, kuto bhayaṁ?
for one free from the beloved there is no grief, how is there fear?

From the beloved arises grief, from the beloved arises fear,
priyāṇām anyathībhāvād, unmādam api gacchati. 5.2
due to change in the loved ones, Literally: becoming other, it means falling sick, growing old, or even dying. one even goes mad.

Śokā hi ye vai paridevitaṁ ca, duḥkhaṁ ca lokasya hi naikarūpam,
Indeed, whatever the griefs and lamentations, and the many kinds of suffering of the world,
priyaṁ pratītyeha tad asti sarvaṁ, priye ’sati, syān na kathaṁ cid etat? 5.3
it all exists because of the beloved here, without the beloved, This is a locative absolutive construction describing the circumstance before the question. what (suffering) could there possibly be?

Ye keci sokā paridevitā vā, dukkhā ca lokasmiṁ anekarūpā,
Whatever the griefs or lamentations, and the many kinds of suffering in the world,
piyaṁ paṭicca pabhavanti ete, piye asante, na bhavanti ete.
these (all) arise because of the beloved, without the beloved, these do not originate.

Tasmād dhi te sukhitā vītaśokā, yeṣāṁ priyaṁ nāsti kathaṁ cid eva,
Therefore they are happy and free from grief, for whom there is nothing beloved whatsoever,
tasmād aśokaṁ padam eṣamāṇaḥ, priyaṁ na kurvīta hi jīvaloke. 5.4
therefore one seeking the state without grief, should not create love for anything in the world of the living.

Tasmā hi te sukhino vītasokā, yesaṁ piyaṁ natthi kuhiñci loke,
Therefore they are happy and free from grief, for whom there is nothing beloved in the world,
tasmā asokaṁ virajaṁ patthayāno, piyaṁ na kayirātha kuhiñci loke.
therefore one wishing for what is griefless, dustless, should not create love for anything in the world.

Do not ever have association with the beloved, and one should not always be with the unloved,
priyāṇām adarśanaṁ duḥkham, apriyāṇāṁ ca darśanam. 5.5
not seeing those loved is suffering, and also seeing those unloved.

Do not associate at any time with the beloved, nor with the unloved,
piyānaṁ adassanaṁ dukkhaṁ, appiyānañ-ca dassanaṁ.
not seeing those loved is suffering, and also seeing those unloved.

From separation from the beloved and association with the unloved
tīvra utpadyate śoko, jīryante yena mānavāḥ. 5.6
intense grief arises, by which people waste away.

Priyaṁ mṛtaṁ kālagataṁ, jñātayaḥ sahitāḥ sthitāḥ,
When a loved one is dead and gone, This is an accusative absolutive construction describing the time when something happens. The participle santam is omitted, but must be understood here. See Wijesekera, §57 for similar cases in Pāḷi. relatives, gathering, stand around,
śocanti dīrgham adhvānaṁ, duḥkho hi priyasaṁgamaḥ. 5.7
they grieve for a long time, for attachment to the beloved is suffering.

Therefore one should not have love, for the existence of the beloved is harmful,

Having applied oneself to the unsuitable, never having applied oneself to what is suitable,
arthaṁ hitvā, priyagrāhī spṛhayaty arthayogine. 5.9
abandoning the good, the one who grasps the beloved envies the one applied to good.

Having applied oneself to the unsuitable, not having applied oneself in what is suitable,
atthaṁ hitvā, piyaggāhī pihetattānuyoginaṁ.
abandoning the good, the one who grasps the beloved envies the person who applies himself.

Priyarūpasātagrathitā Devakāyāḥ pṛthaksthitāḥ,
Hosts of Devas, tied by the pleasure of beloved forms, stand divided,
āghādinaḥ paridyūnā, Mṛtyurājavaśaṁ gatāḥ. 5.10
tormented, worn out, they have gone under the power of the King of Death.
Priya-rūpa-sāta-grathitāḥ (m. nom. pl.) bound by the pleasure of beloved forms; Deva-kāyāḥ (m. nom. pl.) hosts of Devas; pṛthak-sthitāḥ (m. nom. pl.) standing divided; āghādinaḥ (m. nom. pl.) tormented; paridyūnāḥ (m. nom. pl.) worn out; Mṛtyu-rāja-vaśam (n. acc. sg.) under the power of the King of Death; gatāḥ (m. nom. pl. pp.) gone.
Piyarūpassādagathitāse Devakāyā puthumanussā ca,
Hosts of Devas and many men are tied by the satisfaction in beloved forms,
aghāvino parijunnā, Maccurājassa vasaṁ gacchanti.
tormented, worn out, they come under the power of the King of Death.

Ye vai divā ca rātrau caivāpramattāḥ priyaṁ jahati nityam,
For sure those who are heedful by day and by night, always abandon There is a discord between the subject ye, plural, and the verb jahati, singular. It arises due the needs of the Old Gīti metre, which requires a short syllable in this position. Note that the Pāḷi has the correct form jahanti. the beloved,
te vai khananti tv aghamūlaṁ, Mṛtyu-r-āmiṣaṁ durativartyam. 5.11
they surely dig up the root of misery, Death’s bait, so difficult to transcend.

The unpleasant with a pleasant form, the unlovely with a lovely form,
duḥkhaṁ sukhyasya rūpeṇa, pramattān abhimardati. 5.12
the painful in the form of pleasure, destroy the heedless.

The disagreeable with an agreeable form, the unlovely with a lovely form,
dukkhaṁ sukhassa rūpena, pamattam-ativattati.
the painful in the form of pleasure, overcome the heedless one.

Ātmānaṁ cet priyaṁ vidyān, nainaṁ pāpena yojayet,
If one would understand oneself as loved, one would not join oneself to wrong,
na hy etat sulabhaṁ bhavati sukhaṁ duṣkṛtakāriṇā. The syntax is complicated in this pādayuga, in prose it would be: hy etat sukhaṁ duṣkṛtakāriṇā na sulabhaṁ bhavati. 5.13
for happiness is not easy to obtain by one who does bad deeds.

trayāṇām anyatamaṁ yāmaṁ pratijāgreta paṇḍitaḥ. 5.15

If one were to know oneself as loved, one should guard oneself well,
tiṇṇam-aññataraṁ yāmaṁ paṭijaggeyya paṇḍito.
during any of the three stages (of life) The comm. explains this as meaning during at least one stage of life, and to apply, in different ways, to both lay and monastic. the wise one should be watchful.

so one should guard over oneself, do not let the moment pass you by,
kṣaṇātītā hi śocante, narakeṣu samarpitāḥ. 5.17
for those who let the moment pass grieve, when cast into purgatory. This is a locative absolutive construction of past participle with the locative, giving a temporal sense.

If one knows oneself as loved, well-guarded, one should guard oneself

nagaraṁ yathā paccantaṁ guttaṁ santarabāhiraṁ,
just as a border town is guarded on the inside and the outside,
evaṁ gopetha attānaṁ, khaṇo vo mā upaccagā,
so one should guard over oneself, do not let the moment pass you by,
khaṇātītā hi socanti, nirayamhi samappitā.
for those who let the moment pass grieve, when cast into purgatory.

Having searched all directions with the mind, one finds no one more loved than oneself,
evaṁ priyaḥ pṛthagātmā pareṣāṁ, tasmān na hiṁsyāt param ātmakāraṇam. 5.18
in this way, others each love themselves, therefore one who cares for oneself should not harm another.

Just as when one who lives abroad comes safely from afar,

his relatives, companions and friends rejoice at his return,
Cira-pravāsinam (m. acc. sg.) one long-abroad; yadvat (indec.) just as; dūrataḥ (indec.) from afar; svasti-āgatam (m. acc. sg.) comes safely; jñātayaḥ (m. nom. pl.) relatives; su-hṛdaḥ (m. nom. pl.) companions; mitrāḥ (m. nom. pl.) friends; ca (indec.) and; abhinandanti (3rd. pl. pres.) they rejoice; āgatam (m. acc. sg. pp.) who has returned.
kṛtapuṇyaṁ tathā martyam asmāl lokāt paraṁ gatam,
so, when a mortal who has performed merit goes from this world to the next,
puṇyāny evābhinandanti, priyaṁ jñātim ivāgatam. 5.21
his merits rejoice, just as a relative rejoices for their loved one at his return.

tatheva katapuññam-pi asmā lokā paraṁ gataṁ,
so, when one who has performed merit goes from this world to the next,
puññāni paṭigaṇhanti, piyaṁ ñātīva āgataṁ.
his merits are received, just as relatives receive their loved one at his return.

ātmanaḥ kārakaṁ santaṁ, taṁ janaḥ kurute priyam. 5.24
the good one who acts for himself, I.e. acts well, for his own benefit. that one the people do love.
Dharma-stham (m. acc. sg.) established in Dharma; śīla-saṁpannam (m. acc. sg.) endowed with virtue; hrīmantam (m. acc. sg.) conscientious; satya-vādinam (m. acc. sg.) a speaker of truth; ātmanaḥ (m. gen. sg.) for oneself; kārakam (m. acc. sg.) who acts; santam (m. acc. sg. pp.) the good one; tam (m. acc. sg. dem. pron.) that one; janaḥ (m. nom. sg.) the people; kurute (3rd. sg. pres.) makes; priyam (m. acc. sg.) love.
Sīladassanasampannaṁ, dhammaṭṭhaṁ saccavedinaṁ, The Pāḷi reading has a variant: saccavādinaṁ, which is in line with the Udānavarga here; and also the Patna Dhammapada has the same reading: saccavādinaṁ. Because of this correspondence, it may be the better reading.
Endowed with virtue and insight, established in Dhamma and knowing the truths,
attano kamma’ kubbānaṁ, taṁ jano kurute piyaṁ.
doing his own deeds, that one the people do love.

Avavadetānuśāsīta, cāsabhyāc ca nivārayet,
One should both advise and instruct, and forbid what is vile,
asatāṁ na priyo bhavati, satāṁ bhavati tu priyaḥ. 5.26
one is not loved by the bad, but one is loved by the good. The sentiment is expressed the other way round in the Pāḷi text.
