vitīrṇaparalokasya, nākāryaṁ pāpam asti yat. 9.1
who has abandoned the next world, there is no bad thing which is left undone.

mākāsi pāpakaṁ kammaṁ, āvi vā yadi vā raho.”
do not do a wicked deed, whether in the open or in secret.”

Sa cet pāpāni karmāṇi kariṣyasi karoṣi vā,
If one is doing, or will do, wicked deeds,

na te duḥkhāt pramokṣo ’sti, hy utplutyāpi palāyataḥ. 9.4
there is no freedom from suffering for you, even if you have jumped up and are fleeing away.

Neither in the firmament, nor in the middle of the ocean, nor after entering a mountain cleft:

na vidyate ’sau pṛthivīpradeśo yatra sthitaṁ na prasaheta karma. 9.5
there is no place found on this earth where standing death would not overpower one.

Na antalikkhe, na samuddamajjhe, na pabbatānaṁ vivaraṁ pavissa:
Neither in the sky, nor in the middle of the ocean, nor after entering a mountain cleft:

na vijjatī so jagatippadeso yatthaṭṭhito mucceyya pāpakammā.
there is no place found on this earth where one stands that can be free from (the results of) wicked deeds. It is interesting here that pāpakammā seems to indicate not the deed itself, but the result of the deed.

Kṛṣṇaśuklāni karmāṇi na praṇaśyanti dehinaḥ,
The dark and light deeds of the embodied do not perish,

kālaṁ prā[ ]iyante, kṛtāny upa[ ]nāni ca. 9.5A

Kṛṣṇa-śuklāni (n. nom. pl.) dark and light; karmāṇi (n. nom. pl.) deeds; na (indec.) not; praṇaśyanti (3rd. pl. pres.) they perish; dehinaḥ (m. gen. sg.) of the embodied one; kālam (m. acc. sg.) time; kṛtāni (n. nom. pl. pp.) deeds done; ca (indec.) and.

Note

Prof. Dharmavardhana-Jñānagarbha proposes reading the last line:

kālaṁ prāsahiyante kṛtāny upacitāni ca. There is no Tibetan parallel to this line, so we cannot compare.
deeds done and accumulated will endure through time.

There are two problems with this reading: 1) line c would then have only seven syllables. This is not impossible, though, as other seven-syllables lines occur in the Udānavarga. 2) Bernhard transcribed the second half as upa[ ]nāni. The proposed reading would change it to upa[ ]tāni. This again is not impossible as na and ta are similar in most Indian scripts.

The proposed reading seems so appropriate in the context that I am inclined to agree with it, despite the difficulties. I am very grateful for Prof. Mattia’s suggestion here. If we accept it, we would get an analysis:

Ye kūṭamānayogena viṣameṇa ca karmaṇā,
Those who, through fraud, conceit, deceit and crooked deeds,

manuṣyān upahiṁsanti, paratopakrameṇa vā,
or through attacks on others, harm human beings,

te vai prapātaṁ prapatanti, karmabaddhā hi te janāḥ. 9.7
they indeed fall into ruin, for people are bound by their deeds.

For a person surely plunders for as long as it benefits him,

tato ’nye taṁ vilumpanti, sa viloptā vilupyate. 9.9
because of that others plunder him, the plunderer himself is plundered.

Kurvaṁ hi manyate bālo naitaṁ mām āgamiṣyati,
The fool thinks: My doings will not come back to me,

sāmparāye tu jānāti yā gatiḥ pāpakarmaṇām. 9.10
but in the future life he knows the destination of those who did wrong deeds.

committing wicked deeds, which have bitter fruits.

karontā pāpakaṁ kammaṁ, yaṁ hoti kaṭukapphalaṁ.

Na tat karma kṛtaṁ sādhu, yat kṛtvā hy anutapyate,
That deed is not well done, which, having done, one feels regret,

rudann aśrumukho yasya, vipākaṁ pratiṣevate. 9.14
after which, This is the genitive of time, giving the meaning: after which. See Wijesekera, §157. crying, with tears on the face, one experiences the result.

Hasantaḥ pāpakaṁ karma, kurvanty ātmasukhaiṣiṇaḥ,
Laughing at wicked deeds, they do them seeking their own happiness,

rudantas tasya vīpākaṁ prativindanti duḥkhitāḥ. 9.16
after that, those who suffer, crying, experience the result.

smouldering, it follows the fool, like a fire covered with ashes.

Na hi pāpaṁ kataṁ kammaṁ, sajju khīraṁ va muccati,
For a deed that has been badly done, like milk, does not sour immediately, The comm. here takes sajju and khīraṁ as compounded, giving the meaning: fresh milk, but this leaves the simile incomplete, as it only says: like fresh milk, does not sour; but the point is not that fresh milk does not sour, but that milk does not sour immediately, interpreting sajju as an adverb.

ḍahantaṁ bālam-anveti, bhasmacchanno va pāvako.
smouldering, it follows the fool, like a fire covered with ashes.

Na hi pāpakṛtaṁ karma, sadyaḥ śastram iva kṛntati,
For a deed that has been badly done, does not cut immediately like a sword,

mparāye tu jānāti yā gatiḥ pāpakarmaṇām,
but in the future life one knows the destination of those who did wicked deeds,

paścāt tu kaṭukaṁ bhavati vipākaṁ pratiṣevataḥ. 9.18
and later it is bitter for one experiencing the result.

As rust arises from iron, and arisen it then eats it away,

evaṁ hy aniśāmyacāriṇaṁ – svāni karmāṇi nayanti durgatim. 9.19
so with one who is living unrestrained – his own deeds lead him to a bad destination.
