The Chapter about the Path

Āryasatyāni catvāri prajñayā paśyate yadā,
When one sees with wisdom the four Noble Truths,
eṣa mārgaṁ prajānāti bhavatṛṣṇāpradālanam. 12.1
one knows this path is the destroyer of craving for existence.

Whoever has gone for refuge to the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Saṅgha,
cattāri Ariyasaccāni sammappaññāya passati.
that one sees with right wisdom the four Noble Truths.

Just as dust disturbed by the winds is calmed by rain,
evaṁ śāmyanti saṁkalpāḥ prajñayā paśyate yadā. 12.2
so intentions cease when one sees with wisdom.

Rajamuhatañ-ca vātena yathā meghopasammaye,
Just as dust disturbed by the wind would be calmed by a rain cloud,
evaṁ sammanti saṅkappā yadā paññāya passati.
so intentions are calmed when one sees with wisdom.

Śreṣṭhā hi prajñā loke ’smiṁ, yeyaṁ nirvedhagāminī,
Wisdom is best in this world, which leads to penetration,
yayā samyak prajānāti jātimaraṇasaṁkṣayam. 12.3
by which one rightly knows the complete destruction of birth and death.

by which one rightly knows the destruction of birth and existence.

Mārgeṣv aṣṭāṅgikaḥ śreṣṭhaś, Catvāry Āryāṇi satyataḥ,
Amongst paths the eightfold is best, amongst truths the Four Noble (Truths),
śreṣṭho virāgo dharmāṇāṁ, Cakṣuṣmāṁ dvipadeṣu ca. 12.4
amongst states dispassion is best, amongst the two-legged the Visionary is best. We must understand śreṣṭho as working twice in this pādayuga.

Amongst paths the eightfold is best, amongst truths the Four sayings,
virāgo seṭṭho dhammānaṁ, dipadānañ-ca Cakkhumā.
amongst states dispassion is best, amongst the two-legged the Visionary is best.

When one sees with wisdom all conditioned things are impermanent,
atha nirvidyate duḥkhād: eṣa mārgo viśuddhaye. 12.5
then one grows tired because of suffering: Udānavarga uses an ablative here, while the Pāḷi uses a locative. this is the path to purity.

atha nibbindatī dukkhe: esa maggo visuddhiyā.
then one grows tired of suffering: More literally, as dukkhe is in the locative case: one grows tired in regard to suffering. this is the path to purity.

When one sees with wisdom all conditioned things are suffering,
atha nirvidyate duḥkhād: eṣa mārgo viśuddhaye. 12.6
then one grows tired because of suffering: this is the path to purity.

When one sees with wisdom all conditioned things are empty,
atha nirvidyate duḥkhād: eṣa mārgo viśuddhaye. 12.7
then one grows tired because of suffering: this is the path to purity. This verse finds no parallel in the Pāḷi but the sentiment is in line with the early teachings.

Ākhyāto vo mayā mārgas, tv ajñāyai śalyakṛntanaḥ,
The path was declared to you by me, the cutting of the darts of ignorance, Although they look similar ajñāyai is a genitive, of ignorance; aññāya in the Pāḷi means, however: by deep knowledge, it is an absolutive, indicating the means.
yuṣmābhir eva karaṇīyam, ākhyātāras Tathāgatāḥ. 12.9
this is indeed to be done by you, the Realised Ones (only) point the way.

Etaṁ hi tumhe paṭipannā dukkhassantaṁ karissatha,
Having entered upon this path you make an end to suffering,
akkhāto ve mayā maggo, aññāya sallasanthanaṁ.
the path was declared by me, the removal of the darts by deep knowledge.

Deśito vo mayā mārgas, tṛṣṇāśalyanikṛntanaḥ,
The path has been shown by me to you, the cutting of thorns of craving,
yuṣmābhir eva karaṇīyam, deṣṭāro hi Tathāgatāḥ. 12.10
this is surely to be done by you, the Realised Ones are only teachers.

This is the path, there is no other, to purity of insight,
pratipannakāḥ prahāsyanti dhyāyino Mārabandhanam. 12.11
the meditators who enter this path abandon the bonds of Māra.

Eso va maggo natthañño, dassanassa visuddhiyā,
This is the path, there is no other, to purity of insight,
etaṁ hi tumhe paṭipajjatha, Mārassetaṁ pamohanaṁ.
you should enter upon this path, for the confounding of Māra.

Eṣo ’ñjaso hy eṣa ca vai parākramas, tv ekāyano haṁsapatho yathā hrade,
This is (the path) The referent is brought over from the preceding verse. for directness, this indeed is the (path) for striving, a one-way (path), like the path of a goose across a lake,
yam adhyagāc Chakyamuniḥ samāhitas, tam eva cākhyāti gaṇeṣv abhīkṣṇaśaḥ. 12.12
which Śakyamuni travelled, composed, he declares it amongst the communities repeatedly.

Ekāyanaṁ jātijarāntadarśī mārgaṁ vadaty eṣa hitānukampī,
The one compassionate for welfare, who sees the end of birth and old age, proclaims the path as one way,
etena mārgeṇa hi tīrṇavantas, tariṣyate ye prataranti caugham. 12.13
by this path some crossed over the flood earlier, some will cross, and there are those who are crossing.

Atyantaniṣṭhāya damāya śuddhaye, saṁsārajātīmaraṇakṣayāya,
For the complete attainment of training and purity, for the destruction of transmigration through births and deaths,
anekadhātupratisaṁvidhāya, mārgo hy ayaṁ lokavidā prakāśitaḥ. 12.14
for disposing of the manifold elements, this path was proclaimed by the knower of the worlds.

Gaṅgāgataṁ yadvad apetadoṣaṁ, saṁsyandate vāri tu sāgareṇa,
Just as water coming from the Ganges, free from faults, flows along with the ocean,
tathaiva mārgaḥ Sugatapradeśitaḥ, saṁsyandate ’yaṁ hy amṛtasya prāptaye. 12.15
so does this path, taught by the Sugata, flow along to the attainment of the deathless.

The one who turned the Dharma Wheel, unheard of formerly, the one having compassion for all beings,
taṁ tādṛśaṁ Devanarāgrasatvaṁ, nityaṁ namasyeta bhavasya pāragam. 12.16
such a one, the supreme being amongst Devas and humans, the one who crossed over existence, one should constantly worship.

One should always think wholesome thoughts, and again always avoid unwholesome ones,
tato vitarkāṁś ca vicāritāni ca prahāsyate vṛṣṭir ivoddhataṁ rajaḥ. 12.17
and then he will abandon thoughts and reflections as the rain removes disturbed dust.

Tayo vitakke kusale vitakkaye, tayo pana akusale nirākare,
One should think three wholesome thoughts, but reject three unwholesome ones,
sa ve vitakkāni vicāritāni sameti, vuṭṭhīva rajaṁ samūhataṁ,
one surely settles thinking and reflection, like uprooted dust is settled by rain,
sa ve vitakkūpasamena cetasā, idheva so santipadaṁ samajjhagā.
with a mind that has calmed thinking, one has here reached the state of peace.

Sa vai vitarkopaśamena cetasā, spṛśeta Saṁbodhisukhaṁ hy anuttaram,
With a mind that has calmed thinking, one should experience the supreme happiness of Full Awakening,
śubhaṁ samādhiṁ manasā nibandhayed, vivekajaṁ bhāvayitvāpramāṇam,
he should establish beautiful concentration with the mind, having cultivated the immeasurables born of seclusion,
pradālayitvā tribhur ālayāṁs trīṁ jahāti bandhāṁ nipakaḥ pratismṛtaḥ. 12.18
having destroyed the three attachments with the three (wholesome thoughts), The referent is again in the previous verse. the discerning one, mindful, abandons the bonds.

Having the weapon of wisdom, endowed with the strength of meditation, composed, delighting in meditation, mindful of himself,
lokasya buddhvā hy udayavyayaṁ ca, vimucyate vedakaḥ sarvato ’sau. 12.19
having understood the rise and fall of the world, the Perfect One is freed in every way.
Prajñā-āyudhaḥ (m. nom. sg.) one who has wisdom as a weapon; dhyāna-bala-upapetaḥ (m. nom. sg.) one who is endowed with the strength of meditation; samāhitaḥ (m. nom. sg. pp.) composed; dhyāna-rataḥ (m. nom. sg.) one who delights in meditation; smṛta-ātmā (m. nom. sg.) mindful of himself; lokasya (m. gen. sg.) of the world; buddhvā (abs.) having understood; hi (indec.) indeed; udaya-vyayam (m. acc. sg.) rise and fall; ca (indec.) and; vimucyate (3rd. sg. pres. pass.) is freed; vedakaḥ (m. nom. sg.) the Perfect One; sarvataḥ (indec.) in every way; asau (m. nom. sg. dem. pron.) that.
Paññābalaṁ sīlavatūpapannaṁ, samāhitaṁ jhānarataṁ satīmaṁ,
Having the strength of wisdom, endowed with virtue and practice, composed, delighting in meditation, mindful,
saṅgā pamuttaṁ akhilaṁ anāsavaṁ, taṁ vāpi dhīrā muni vedayaṁ.
free from attachments, obstructions, pollutants, the steadfast know him as a sage.

Sukhaṁ sukhārthī labhate samācaraṁ, kīrtiṁ samāpnoti yaśaś ca sarvataḥ,
The one seeking happiness finds happiness through good conduct, he attains renown and fame everywhere,
ya āryam aṣṭāṅgikam āñjasaṁ śivaṁ bhāvayati mārgaṁ hy amṛtasya prāptaye. 12.20
the one who cultivates the noble, auspicious eightfold direct road for the attainment of the path to the deathless.
Sukham (n. acc. coll. sg.) happiness; sukha-arthī (m. nom. sg.) a seeker of happiness; labhate (3rd. sg. pres.) obtains; samācaram (m. acc. sg.) good conduct; kīrtim (f. acc. sg.) renown; samāpnoti (3rd. sg. pres.) attains; yaśaḥ (n. acc. sg.) fame; ca (indec.) and; sarvataḥ (indec.) everywhere; yaḥ (m. nom. sg. rel. pron.) one who; āryam (m. acc. sg.) noble; aṣṭāṅgikam (m. acc. sg.) eightfold; āñjasam (m. acc. sg.) direct road; śivam (m. acc. sg.) auspicious; mārgam (m. acc. sg.) the path; bhāvayati (3rd. sg. pres.) cultivates; hy (euphonic particle); amṛtasya (n. gen. sg.) of the deathless; prāptaye (f. dat. sg. pp.) for the attainment.
Sukhaṁ sukhattho labhate tad-ācaraṁ, kittiñ-ca pappoti, yasassa vaḍḍhati,
The one seeking happiness finds happiness through his conduct, he attains renown and his fame grows,
yo ariyamaṭṭhaṅgikam-añjasaṁ ujuṁ bhāveti maggaṁ amatassa pattiyā.
the one who cultivates the straight noble eightfold direct road for the attainment of the path to the deathless.
