Pūrvaṁ hi kṛtyaṁ pratijāgareta: “Mā me kṛtyaṁ kṛtyakāle vihanyāt,”
One should first be watchful about what is to be done, (thinking): “Do not let what is to be done be impeded by me at the time it is done,”

taṁ nityakāle pratiyatyakāriṇaṁ, naiva kṛtyaṁ kṛtyakāle vihanti. 16.1
for that one constantly vigilant at the right time, duty does not impede at the time it is to be done.

Pūrvam (indec.) first; hi (indec.) for; kṛtyam (n. nom. sg. gerund.) what is to be done; pratijāgareta (3rd. sg. opt.) one should be watchful; (indec.) not let; me (inst. sg. pers. pron.) by me; kṛtyam (n. nom. sg. gerund.) what is to be done; kṛtya-kāle (m. loc. sg.) at the time for doing; vihanyāt (3rd. sg. opt.) it should impede; tam (m. acc. sg. dem. pron.) that one; nitya-kāle (m. loc. sg.) constantly at the right time; pratiyatya-kāriṇam (m. acc. sg.) one who is acting vigilantly; na (indec.) not; eva (indec.) indeed; kṛtyam (n. nom. sg. gerund.) what is to be done; kṛtya-kāle (m. loc. sg.) at the time for doing; vihanti (3rd. sg. pres.) it impedes.

Anāgataṁ paṭikayirātha kiccaṁ: “Mā maṁ kiccaṁ kiccakāle byadhesi,”
One should prepare for a future duty, (thinking): “Do not let the duty trouble me at the time it is done,”

taṁ tādisaṁ paṭikatakiccakāriṁ, na taṁ kiccaṁ kiccakāle byadheti.
such a one, having prepared his duty in advance, is not troubled at the time it should be done.

Vyāyametaiva puruṣo yāvad arthasya niṣpadaḥ,
A person should endeavour until accomplishment of the goal,

paśyed asau tathātmārthaṁ yathaivecchet tathā bhavet. 16.2
one should foresee one’s own goal in such a way that it may become as one may desire.

Vyāyameta (3rd. sg. opt.) one should endeavour; eva (indec.) indeed; puruṣaḥ (m. nom. sg.) a person; yāvat (indec.) until; arthasya (m. gen. sg.) of the goal; niṣpadaḥ (f. gen. sg.) of the accomplishment; paśyet (3rd. sg. opt.) one should see; asau (m. nom. sg. dem. pron.) that one; tathā (indec.) in such a way; ātma-artham (m. acc. sg.) one’s own goal; yathā (indec.) as; eva (indec.) indeed; icchet (3rd. sg. opt.) one may desire; tathā (indec.) so; bhavet (3rd. sg. opt.) it may become.

Vāyametheva puriso yāva atthassa nipphadā,
A person should endeavour until accomplishment of the goal,

nipphannasobhano attho, Verocanavaco idaṁ.
when the goal is accomplished it shines, this is the word of Verocana.

Uttiṣṭhata vyāyamata, kurudhvaṁ dvīpam ātmanaḥ,
Rouse yourselves, strive, make an island for yourselves,

karmāro rajatasyaiva, haradhvaṁ malam ātmanaḥ,
as a silver-smith removes impurities, remove the impurities from yourself,

nirdhāntamalā hy anaṅgaṇā, na punar jātijarām upeṣyetha. 16.3
with impurities removed, without blemish, you might not undergo birth and old age again.

Uttiṣṭhata (2nd. pl. imp.) rouse yourselves!; vyāyamata (2nd. pl. imp.) strive!; kurudhvam (2nd. pl. imp.) make; dvīpam (m. acc. sg.) an island; ātmanaḥ (m. gen. sg.) for oneself; karmāraḥ (m. nom. sg.) a silver-smith; rajatasya (n. gen. sg.) of silver; eva (indec.) indeed; haradhvam (2nd. pl. imp.) remove; malam (n. acc. coll. sg.) impurities; ātmanaḥ (m. abl. sg.) from oneself; nirdhānta-malāḥ (m. nom. pl.) with impurities removed; hi (indec.) for; an-aṅgaṇāḥ (m. nom. pl.) without blemish; na (indec.) not; punaḥ (indec.) again; jāti-jarām (f. acc. du.) birth and old age; upeṣyetha (2nd. pl. opt.) you might undergo.

So karohi dīpam-attano, khippaṁ vāyama, paṇḍito bhava,
You should make an island for yourself, endeavour soon, be a wise one,

niddhantamalo anaṅgaṇo, na punaṁ jātijaraṁ upehisi.
with stains removed, without blemish, you will not undergo birth and old age again.

Alajjitavye lajjante, lajjitavye tv alajjinaḥ,
They are ashamed of what is not shameful, but unashamed of what is shameful,

abhaye bhayadarśīno, bhaye cābhayadarśinaḥ,
seeing danger in what is not dangerous, and not seeing danger in what is dangerous,

mithyādṛṣṭisamādānāt, satvā gacchanti durgatim. 16.4
from undertaking wrong views, beings go to a bad destination.

A-lajjitavye (n. loc. sg.) not shameful; lajjante (3rd. pl. pres.) they are ashamed; lajjitavye (n. loc. sg.) in what is shameful; tu (indec.) but; a-lajjinaḥ (m. nom. pl.) unashamed; abhaye (n. loc. sg.) in what is not dangerous; bhaya-darśīnaḥ (m. nom. pl.) seeing danger; bhaye (n. loc. sg.) in what is dangerous; ca (indec.) and; abhaya-darśinaḥ (m. nom. pl.) the ones who do not see danger; mithyā-dṛṣṭi-samādānāt (n. abl. sg.) from the undertaking of wrong views; satvāḥ (m. nom. pl.) beings; gacchanti (3rd. pl. pres.) they go; dur-gatim (f. acc. sg.) a bad destination.

Alajjitāye lajjanti, lajjitāye na lajjare,

micchādiṭṭhisamādānā, sattā gacchanti duggatiṁ.

sa vai dṛṣṭapado dhīro, maraṇānte na śocate. 16.11
that steadfast one who has seen the goal, does not grieve at the end in death.

Kṛṣnāṁ dharmāṁ viprahāya, śuklāṁ bhāvayata bhikṣavaḥ,
Having abandoned dark thoughts, you should develop bright thoughts, monastics,

okād anokam āgamya, vivekam anubṛṁhayet,
from home having come to homelessness, one should be devoted to seclusion,

tatra cābhirametāryo, hit kāmān akiñcanaḥ. 16.14
there the noble one should find great delight, having abandoned desires, having nothing.

Kṛṣṇām (f. acc. pl.) dark; dharmān (m. acc. pl.) thoughts; viprahāya (abs.) having abandoned; śuklām (f. acc. pl.) bright; bhāvayata (2nd. pl. imp.) you should develop; bhikṣavaḥ (m. voc. pl.) monastics; okāt (m. abl. sg.) from home; anokam (m. acc. sg.) to homelessness; āgamya (abs.) having come; vivekam (m. acc. sg.) seclusion; anubṛṁhayet (3rd. sg. opt.) one should be devoted to; tatra (indec.) there; ca (indec.) and; abhiramet (3rd. sg. opt.) one should find great delight; āryaḥ (m. nom. sg.) noble one; hitvā (abs.) having abandoned; kāmān (m. acc. pl.) desires; a-kiñcanaḥ (m. nom. sg.) one who has nothing.

Kaṇhaṁ dhammaṁ vippahāya, sukkaṁ bhāvetha paṇḍito,
Having abandoned a dark thought, the wise one should develop a bright thought,

okā anokamāgamma, viveke yattha dūramaṁ.
from home having come to homelessness, in solitude, where it is hard to find delight.

Tatrābhiratim-iccheyya, hitvā kāme akiñcano,
One should take delight in that place, having abandoned desires, having nothing,

pariyodapeyya attānaṁ cittaklesehi paṇḍito.
the wise one should then purify the self of defilements of mind.

Śuddhasya hi sadā phalguḥ, śuddhasya poṣathaḥ sadā,
For the pure one it is always a spring festival, for the pure one it is always an observance day,

śuddhasya śucikarmaṇaḥ, sadā saṁpadyate vratam. 16.15
for the pure one, of pure deed, his vow always succeeds.

Suddhassa ve sadā phaggu, suddhassuposatho sadā,
For the pure one it is always a spring festival, The commentary says: Sadā phaggū ti niccam-pi phaggunīnakkhattam-eva; always a festival means constantly the spring festival. for the pure one it is always an observance day,

suddhassa sucikammassa, sadā sampajjate vataṁ.
for the pure one, of pure deed, his vow always succeeds.

Kṣetrāṇi tṛṇadoṣāṇi, rāgadoṣā tv iyaṁ prajā,
Fields are ruined by weeds, this generation is ruined by passion,

tasmād vigatarāgebhyo dattaṁ bhavati mahāphalam. 16.16
therefore what is given to those without passion has great fruit.

Kṣetrāṇi (n. nom. pl.) fields; tṛṇa-doṣāṇi (n. nom. pl.) ruined by weeds; rāga-doṣā (f. nom. sg.) ruined by passion; tv (separator); iyam (f. nom. sg. dem. pron.) this; prajā (f. nom. sg.) generation; tasmāt (indec.) therefore; vigata-rāgebhyaḥ (m. dat. pl.) to those without passion; dattam (n. nom. sg. pp.) what is given; bhavati (3rd. sg. pres.) is; mahā-phalam (n. nom. sg.) great fruit.

Tiṇadosāni khettāni, rāgadosā ayaṁ pajā,
Fields are ruined by weeds, this generation is ruined by passion,

tasmā hi vītarāgesu dinnaṁ hoti mahapphalaṁ.
therefore what is given amongst those without passion has great fruit.

Ketṇi tṛṇadoṣāṇi, dveṣadoṣā tv iyaṁ prajā,
Fields are ruined by weeds, this generation is ruined by hatred,

tasmād vigatadveṣebhyo dattaṁ bhavati mahāphalam. 16.17
therefore what is given to those without hatred has great fruit.

therefore having given to those without delusion there is great fruit.

Fields are ruined by weeds, this generation is ruined by greed,

tasmād vigatalobhebhyo dattaṁ bhavati mahāphalam. 16.20
therefore what is given to those without greed has great fruit.

Fields are ruined by weeds, this generation is ruined by craving,

tasmād vigatatṛṣṇebhyo dattaṁ bhavati mahāphalam. 16.21
therefore what is given to those without craving has great fruit. Dhp 359 has icchādosa, ruined by desire.

Master of the sixth, The sixth here means the mind, the mind is master and king over the senses. one is king, when attached, one is impure,

arakte virajā bhavati, rakte bālo nirucyate. 16.22
in being unattached, one is dustless, in being attached, one is called a fool.

where it is afflicted by passion and hatred, also conceit and deceit.

Nagarām (n. nom. sg.) a fortress; hy (euphonic particle); asthi-prākāram (n. nom. sg.) having walls of bones; māṁsa-śoṇita-lepanam (n. nom. sg.) plastered over with flesh and blood; yatra (indec.) where; rāgaḥ (m. nom. sg.) passion; ca (indec.) and; dveṣaḥ (m. nom. sg.) hatred; ca (indec.) and; mānaḥ (m. nom. sg.) conceit; mrakṣaḥ (m. nom. sg.) deceit; ca (indec.) and; bādhyate (3rd. sg. pres. pass.) is afflicted.

Aṭṭhīnaṁ nagaraṁ kataṁ, maṁsalohitalepanaṁ,
This fortress is made of bones, The commentary says: Just as, for the purpose of burning things like front-plates, back-plates, etc., people erect logs of wood, bind them with vines, plaster them with clay, and make an external house designated as a fortress (for a kiln or furnace); in the same way, this internal (body) also is made into a fortress for the purpose of being burned… plastered over with flesh and blood,

yattha jarā ca maccu ca, māno makkho ca ohito.
in which lie hidden old age and death, also conceit and angerund.

Hetuprabhavaṁ sadā hi duḥkhaṁ, tad apaśyaṁ, sa hi tena tatra baddhaḥ,
Suffering always arises from a cause, this I saw, and by that one is bound there,

tasya tu samayāj jahāti saṅgaṁ, na hi bāhyā prajahanti taṁ mahaugham. 16.24
but through calming one abandons the attachment to it, for what is external does not abandon the great flood.
