All-Conquering, All-Wise am I, always undefiled by all phenomena,

sarvaṁjahaḥ, sarvabhayād vimuktaḥ, svayaṁ hy abhijñāya, kam uddiśeyam. 21.1
having given up everything, freed from all danger, deeply knowing myself, who should I point out?

Sabbābhibhū Sabbavidūham-asmi, sabbesu dhammesu anūpalitto,
All-Conquering, All-Wise am I, undefiled in regard to all phenomena,

sabbañjaho, taṇhakkhaye vimutto, sayaṁ abhiññāya, kam-uddiseyyaṁ?
having abandoned everything, free in the destruction of craving, deeply knowing myself, who should I point out? Comm: whom shall I point out as preceptor or teacher?

Kam uddiśeyaṁ tv asamo hy atulyaḥ? Svayaṁ pravaktā, hy adhigamya Bodhim,
Who should I point out, being immeasurable, incomparable? Having attained Awakening, I proclaim myself,

Tathāgato Devamanuṣyaśāstā, sarvajñatāṁ prāpya, balair upetaḥ. 21.2
the Realised One, the teacher of Devas and humans, having attained omniscience, endowed with the strengths.

Indeed, I am an Arhat in the worlds, I am supreme in the worlds,

sadevakeṣu lokeṣu, cāhaṁ Mārābhibhūr Jinaḥ. 21.3
in the worlds together with its Devas, I am the Victor who overcame Māra.

Ahañ-hi Arahā loke, ahaṁ satthā anuttaro,
Indeed I am an Arahat in the world, I am the supreme teacher,

ekom-hi Sammāsambuddho, sītibhūtosmi nibbuto.
I alone am Fully Awakened, having become cool and emancipated.

There is no one who is a teacher for me, no one equal to me is found,

eko ’smiṁ loke Saṁbuddhaḥ, prāptaḥ Saṁbodhim uttamām. 21.4
I alone am the Fully Awakened in the world, having attained the supreme Full Awakening.

Surely Victors like me ought to be known, those who have attained the destruction of the pollutants,

jitā me pāpakā dharmās, tato ’ham Upagā Jinaḥ. 21.5
I am victorious over wicked thoughts, therefore, Upaga, I am the Victor.

Mādisā ve Jinā honti, ye pattā āsavakkhayaṁ,
There are surely Victors like me, who have attained the destruction of the pollutants,

jitā me pāpakā dhammā, tasmāham-Upaka Jino.
I am victorious over wicked thoughts, therefore, Upaka, I am the Victor.

Bārāṇasīṁ gamiṣyāmi, haniṣye ’mṛtadundubhim,
I will go to Bārāṇasī, I will beat the drum of the Deathless.

Dharmacakraṁ pravartayiṣye, lokeṣv aprativartitam. 21.6
I will set the Dharma Wheel rolling, which cannot be turned back in the worlds.

Bārāṇasīm (f. acc. sg.) Benares; gamiṣyāmi (1st. sg. fut.) I will go; haniṣye (1st. sg. fut.) I will beat; amṛta-dundubhim (m. acc. sg.) the drum of the Deathless; Dharma-cakram (n. acc. sg.) the Dharma Wheel; pravartayiṣye (1st. sg. fut. causative) I will set rolling; lokeṣu (m. loc. pl.) in the worlds; a-prativartitam (n. acc. sg.) irreversible.

Dhammacakkaṁ pavattetuṁ gacchāmi Kāsinaṁ puraṁ,
To set the Dhamma Wheel rolling I go to Kāsi city,

andhībhūtasmiṁ lokasmiṁ, āhañchaṁ amatadundubhiṁ.
in a world that is blind, I will beat the drum of the Deathless.

Na hi santaḥ prakāśyante, viditvā lokaparyāyam,
Truly, the good do not become known, having understood the way of the world,

ādeśayanto virajaḥ padaṁ śāntamanīṣiṇaḥ. 21.7
the peaceful and thoughtful ones are (simply) pointing out the dustless state.

Nadantīha mahāvīrāḥ Saddharmeṇa Tathāgatāḥ,
The great heroes, the Realised Ones, proclaim the True Dharma here,

Dharmeṇa nadamānānāṁ, ke tv asūyed vijānakāḥ. 21.8
when proclaiming the Dharma, how could those who understand resent it?

Nadanti (3rd. pl. pres.) they proclaim; iha (indec.) here; mahā-vīrāḥ (m. nom. pl.) great heroes; Sad-dharmeṇa (m. inst. sg.) with the True Dharma; Tathāgatāḥ (m. nom. pl.) the Realised Ones; Dharmeṇa (m. inst. sg.) with the Dharma; nadamānānām (m. gen. pl. prp.) of those who are proclaiming; ke (m. nom. pl. inter. pron.) who?; tv (separator); asūyet (3rd. sg. opt.) would be resent; vijānakāḥ (m. nom. pl.) the understanding ones.

Nayanti ve mahāvīrā Saddhammena Tathāgatā,
The great heroes, the Realised Ones, lead with the True Dhamma,

Dhammena nayamānānaṁ, kā usūyā vijānataṁ?
when guiding with Dhamma, who, understanding, could resent it?

Ye dhyānaprasṛtā dhīrā, naiṣkramyopaśame ratāḥ,
Those steadfast ones, devoted to meditation, who have delight in the peace of renunciation,

Devāpi spṛhayanty eṣāṁ, Buddhānāṁ śrīmatāṁ sadā. 21.9
even the Devas envy them, the always glorious Buddhas.

Ye (m. nom. pl. rel. pron.) those who; dhyāna-prasṛtāḥ (m. nom. pl.) devoted to meditation; dhīrāḥ (m. nom. pl.) the steadfast ones; naiṣkramya-upaśame (m. loc. sg.) in the peace of renunciation; ratāḥ (m. nom. pl. pp.) delight; Devāḥ (m. nom. pl.) the Devas; api (indec.) even; spṛhayanti (3rd. pl. pres.) they envy; eṣām (m. gen. pl.) of them; Buddhānām (m. gen. pl.) of the Buddhas; śrīmatām (m. gen. pl.) of the glorious; sadā (indec.) always.

Ye jhānapasutā dhīrā, nekkhammūpasame ratā,
Those steadfast ones, intent on meditation, who have delight in the peace of renunciation,

Devā pi tesaṁ pihayanti, Sambuddhānaṁ satīmataṁ.
even the Devas envy them, the mindful Fully Awakened Ones.

Teṣāṁ Devā manuṣyāś ca Saṁbuddhānāṁ yaśasvinām,
spṛhayanty āśubuddhīnāṁ, śarīrāntimadhāriṇām. 21.10

Devas and humans envy those Fully Awakened Ones, those who are famous, those of swift intelligence, who bear their final body. This is one of the few verses where we are not able to coherently translate into English pādayuga by pādayuga, but have to take the verse as a whole. This is because the object (the Fully Awakened Ones) is qualified by adjectives in both the first and second pādayugas, while the verb, which we need earlier on in the sentence in English is in the second pādayuga.

Teṣām (m. gen. pl. dem. pron.) of them; Devāḥ (m. nom. pl.) the Devas; manuṣyāḥ (m. nom. pl.) humans; ca (indec.) and; Saṁbuddhānām (m. gen. pl.) of the Fully Awakened Ones; yaśasvinām (m. gen. pl.) those who are famous; spṛhayanti (3rd. pl. pres.) they envy; āśu-buddhīnām (m. gen. pl.) those of swift intelligence; śarīra-antima-dhāriṇām (m. gen. pl.) those who bear their final body.

Tesaṁ Devā manussā ca, Sambuddhānaṁ satīmataṁ,
pihayanti hāsapaññānaṁ, sarīrantimadhārinaṁ.

Devas and humans envy those Fully Awakened Ones, who are mindful, those of joyous wisdom, who bear their final body.

Ye cābhyatītā Saṁbuddhā, ye ca Buddhā hy anāgatāḥ,
Those who are Fully Awakened in the past, and those who will be Awakened in the future,

yaś cāpy etarhi Saṁbuddho, bahūnāṁ śokanāśakaḥ, 21.11
and the one who is a Fully Awakened One at present, destroyer of grief for the many-folk,

sarve Saddharmaguravo vyāhārṣu viharanti ca,
they all live having respect for the True Dharma in their speech,

athāpi vihariṣyanti, eṣā Buddheṣu dharmatā. 21.12
and so also will they live, this is a natural law in the Buddhas.

Sarve (m. nom. pl.) all; Sad-dharma-guravaḥ (m. nom. pl.) honouring the True Dharma; vyāhārṣu (m. loc. pl.) in speech; viharanti (3rd. pl. pres.) they live; ca (indec.) and; atha-api (indec.) and so also; vihariṣyanti (3rd. pl. fut.) they will live; eṣā (f. nom. sg.) this; Buddheṣu (m. loc. pl.) in the Buddhas; dharmatā (f. nom. sg.) natural law.

Ye ca atītā Sambuddhā, ye ca Buddhā anāgatā,
Those who are Fully Awakened in the past, and those who will be Awakened in the future,

yo cetarahi Sambuddho, bahūnaṁ sokanāsano,
and the one who is a Fully Awakened One at present, destroyer of grief for the many-folk,

sabbe Saddhammagaruno vihaṁsu viharanti ca,
they all lived and do now live with respect for the True Dhamma,

tathāpi viharissanti, esā Buddhāna’ dhammatā.
and so also will they live, this is a natural law of the Buddhas.

Tasmād ihātmakāmena, māhātmyam abhikākṣatā,
Therefore here, by one seeking greatness, through love of oneself,

Saddharmo gurukartavyaḥ, smaratā Buddhaśāsanam. 21.13
the True Dharma is to be respected, remembering the Buddhas’ dispensation.

Tasmāt (indec.) therefore; iha (indec.) here; ātma-kāmena (m. inst. sg.) by one who loves oneself; māhātmyam (n. acc. sg.) greatness; abhikāṅkṣatā (m. inst. sg. prp.) by one seeking; Sad-dharmaḥ (m. nom. sg.) the True Dharma; guru-kartavyaḥ (m. nom. sg. gerund.) is to be respected; smaratā (m. inst. sg. prp.) by remembering; Buddha-śāsanam (n. acc. sg.) the Buddhas’ dispensation.

Tasmā hi attakāmena, mahattam-abhikaṅkhatā,
Therefore, by one seeking greatness, through love of oneself,

Saddhammo garukātabbo, saraṁ Buddhāna’ sāsanaṁ.
the True Dhamma is to be respected, the essence of the Buddhas’ dispensation.

Na śraddhāsyanti vai ye tu narā Buddhasya śāsanam,
Those people who will not have faith in the Buddha’s dispensation,

vyasanaṁ te gamiṣyanti, vaṇijo Rākṣasīṣv iva. 21.14
will go to destruction, like the merchants amongst the Rakṣasīs.

Ye na kāhanti ovādaṁ narā Buddhena desitaṁ,
Those people who won’t follow the advice taught by the Buddha,

byasanaṁ te gamissanti, Rakkhasīhi va vāṇijā.
will go on to destruction, like the merchants with the Rakkhasīs. The Jātaka concerns a story of how Yakkhinīs used to capture lost merchants, take them to husband and then devour them when they were finished with them.

Śraddhāsyanti tu ye nityaṁ narā Buddhasya śāsanam,
But those people who will constantly have faith in the Buddha’s dispensation,

svastinā te gamiṣyanti, vālāhenaiva vāṇijāḥ. 21.15
they will go with safety, like the merchants with the cloud-horse.

Śraddhāsyanti (3rd. pl. fut.) they will have faith; tu (indec.) but; ye (m. nom. pl. rel. pron.) those who; nityam (indec.) constantly; narāḥ (m. nom. pl.) people; Buddhasya (m. gen. sg.) of the Buddha; śāsanam (n. acc. sg.) the dispensation; svastinā (n. inst. sg.) with safety; te (m. nom. pl. pers. pron.) they; gamiṣyanti (3rd. pl. fut.) they will go; vālāhena (m. inst. sg.) with the cloud-horse; eva (indec.) indeed; vāṇijāḥ (m. nom. pl.) merchants.

Ye ca kāhanti ovādaṁ narā Buddhena desitaṁ,
But those people who do follow the advice taught by the Buddha,

sotthiṁ pāraṁ gamissanti, valāheneva vāṇijā.
they will cross over to safety, like the merchants with the cloud-horse. In the same Jātaka the Bodhisatta had been born as a cloud-horse, and led some of the merchants who listened to him to safety.

Tathāgataṁ Buddham iha svayabhuvaṁ, dvau vai vitarkau bahulaṁ samudācarete:
Kṣ
emas tathaiva pravivekayuktas, tamonudaṁ pāragataṁ maharṣim. 21.16

To the Realised One, the Buddha, the self-born here, the dispeller of darkness, the one who has crossed beyond, the great seer, two thoughts frequently occur: The thought of safety, and also what is connected with detachment. Here also we must take both pādayugas together to maintain a good flow in the translation, as names for the subject occur in both line a and d, which need to be joined together in English for ease of comprehension.

Tathāgataṁ Buddham-asayhasāhinaṁ, duve vitakkā samudācaranti naṁ:
To the Realised One, the Buddha, who bears the unbearable, The term here is defined in the commentaries as having two meanings, 1) one who bears the unbearable, 2) the conqueror of the unconquerable. Iti-a: asayhassa sakalassabodhi-sambhārassa mahākaruṇādhikārassa ca sahanato vahanato, tathā . . . asayhānaṁpañcannaṁ Mārānaṁ sahanato abhibhavanato. to him two thoughts occur:

Khemo vitakko paṭhamo udīrito, tato viveko dutiyo pakāsito.
The first to arise is the thought of safety, and the second made known is detachment.

Prāptaḥ sa cāryo vaśitām aśeṣāṁ, viṣvottara sarvabhayād vimukta,
That teacher who attained entire mastery, supreme over all, freed from all danger,

tṛṣṇāprahīṇo vimalo nirāśaś, cālokayaṁ lokahitāya satvān. 21.17
who has abandoned craving, stainless, without longing, is illuminating beings for the benefit of the world.

Śaile yathā parvatamūrdhani sthito yathaiva paśyej janatāṁ samantāt,
Just as one standing on a rocky mountain peak might see the people on all sides,

tathā hy asau Dharmamayaṁ sumedhāḥ prāsādam āruhya, samantacakṣuḥ.
so too the intelligent one, climbing the palace made of Dharma, is all-seeing.

Śokābhibhūtāṁ janatām aśoko drākṣīd imāṁ jātijarābhibhūtām. 21.18
The griefless one saw this people overcome by grief, overcome by birth and old age.

Śaile (n. loc. sg.) on a rocky; yathā (indec.) just as; parvata-mūrdhani (m. loc. sg.) on a mountain peak; sthitaḥ (m. nom. sg. pp.) standing; yathā (indec.) as; eva (indec.) indeed; paśyet (3rd. sg. opt.) one might see; janatām (f. acc. sg.) the people; samantāt (m. abl. sg.) on all sides; tathā (indec.) so; hi (indec.) for; asau (m. nom. sg. dem. pron.) that one; Dharma-mayam (m. acc. sg.) made of Dharma; su-medhāḥ (m. nom. sg.) the intelligent one; prāsādam (m. acc. sg.) palace; āruhya (abs.) climbing; samanta-cakṣuḥ (m. nom. sg.) all-seeing; śoka-abhibhūtām (f. acc. sg.) overcome by grief; janatām (f. acc. sg.) the people; a-śokaḥ (m. nom. sg.) the griefless one; drākṣīt (3rd. sg. aor.) he saw; imām (f. acc. sg. dem. pron.) this; jāti-jarā-abhibhūtām (f. acc. sg.) overcome by birth and old age.

Sele yathā pabbatamuddhaniṭṭhito yathāpi passe janataṁ samantato,
Just as one standing on top of a rocky mountain peak might see the people on all sides,

tathūpamaṁ Dhammamayaṁ sumedho, pāsādam-āruyha samantacakkhu.
so too the intelligent one, climbing the palace made of Dhamma, is all-seeing.

Sokāvatiṇṇaṁ janatam-apetasoko avekkhati, jātijarābhibhūtaṁ.
The griefless one considers the people overcome by grief, those ovecome by birth and old age.
