Suttapiṭaka Index, with links to Pāḷi Text and Translation(s)
I have now greatly expanded the database on this page, and put the information in a table, making it possible to filter the table for a quick find, and have added in links to the Pāḷi discourses and other material as found on Sutta Central and to an English translation - where there is one - also (see this if you need a Vinaya Index).
At present the table contains all five Nikāyas. However, it does not cover the Vinayapiṭaka or the Abhidhammapiṭaka. Note that the last six Jātakas are ordered differently, and sometimes have different names, in the Śrī Laṅkan, Burmese and PTS editions. All variations have been added here, and other variant names where I know of them also (e.g. MN 26, Śrī Laṅkā, PTS = Ariyapariyesanasuttaṁ; Burmese = Pāsarāsisuttaṁ).
The script which filters the table allows you to filter with or without diacritics, searching without will yield greater results (fuzzy search), but searching with diacritics will be more specific. This is needed because the great many variants especially in regard to the variants with the reflexive letters (ṭ/t, ḍ/d, ṇ/n ḷ/l). The script also takes care of such variants as Culla-/Cūḷa-; and ṁ/ṃ, and you can use either according to preference. Similarly, whether the name has hyphens or not is irrelevant to the search (Brahmajāla or Brahma-jāla will both work).
You can search by Pāḷi name or sutta abbreviation and number; some link only to Index files, such as nikāyo, vaggo, nipāto, paṇṇāsakaṁ, etc. (note that these Indexes also give a selection of translations in other languages that are available). You can further search for ‘Index’, which will turn up all structural level items linking to an index, or ‘Index 1’, which will give an outline of the top level items in the various Nikāyas.
If you have only the PTS reference, with permission I have embedded a tool here that will find the reference and provide all the links available.
This page does not work offline, as it is loaded from a json file, which needs to be accessed online only. As this is far faster than using .js or .html I have preferred it for this fairly large database (1.2MB). Even so, the speed of the page will depend on your internet connection. Do not keep clicking but give it time to respond. You can type into the box (with or without diacritics), press filter, and the script will filter out what is not in the enquiry.
You can use this widget to find PTS-type references, as in the examples. You can also use the dropdown box (marked with ?) to find a book (abbreviations differ, but both will work). Many thanks to Sebastian Kussl for this widget.
